Buy Crooked Creek: | IndieBound |

Sara and Preston, along with Sara’s young brother Jasper, must flee Arizona when Sara’s family runs afoul of American Indian artifact hunters. Sara, Preston, and Jasper ride into the Heber Valley of Utah seeking shelter and support from Sara’s uncle, but they soon learn that life in the valley is not as it appears and that they cannot escape the burden of memory or the crimes of the past. Resonating with the work of such authors as Cormac McCarthy and Wallace Stegner, Crooked Creek is a warning to us all that we will live or die by virtue of the stories we tell about ourselves, the Earth, and our true place within the web of life.  . . . more>>

Who killed Dora’s child? Did a coyote dingo the Moab poet’s baby? Or was it otherworldly aliens as Dora claims? Was it Hyrum, the newborn’s father, a high school dropout, and would-be scholar/scientist? Or could it be the Babcock brothers, conjoined twins fleeing the world of academic philosophy and trying to find redemption through Cowboying in the La Sal Mountains? Through a series of letters, journal entries, and interviews, a mysterious redactor tries to reconstruct events surrounding the night the baby was born and then disappears. The Scholar of Moab, a black comedy set in 1970’s Moab and contemporary Vienna, uses magical realism to explore the meaning that emerges at the intersection of place, consciousness, and coincidence.  . . . more>>

Vast loss of bird populations at the turn of the century prompted the creation of the nation’s first wildlife refuges in Florida and Oregon, and gave rise to the Audubon Society. This story predates their creation—a tale of one plumer who experiences a tragically late change of heart.  . . . more>>

  2. I was in the Moab Library today and noticed that the person at the desk was preparing THE SCHOLAR OF MOAB to put out on the shelf. I took a look at it and found it to be of interest. I also noticed the name of the the publisher. That is how I got here. It is exciting to think that there is an experimental publisher in our neighbor Torrey. I wish you the best on your birthday and plan to keep track of what you are doing. Three books so far. That is great. Do you have any interest in local poetry?
